Vermicompost is also known as vermicast, worm humus or worm manure/poop. It contains 2% nitrogen, 7% phosphorus, 1% potassium, 1.5% calcium and 3% magnesium.

Vermicompost is used as :

1) Potting soil mixture.
2) Excellent medium for seedling production.
3) Excellent mulch and soil conditioner.
4) Promotes root formation due to auxin content.
5) Great as basal and side dress fertilizer.
6) Perfect alternative of inorganic fertilizer.
7) Helps regulate water holding capacity of soil.

Using Vermicompost:
1) Add thinly on soil.
2) Mix with soil.
3) Place around the base of each plant.

Steps in Vermicomposting:
1) Look for a shade and flood free area. Access to water and organic waste is preferred.
2) Prepare the following materials: worm bin, bedding, water, worms, and organic wastes.
3) Prepare the bed. The size is completely dependent on you.
4) Build the file by placing of sack beddings in file, layering of green manure ( kakawate, chicken dung, leaves, banana trunks and leaves etc….), adding a soil layer and watering. Repeat layering until the stack of five to six layers is achieved.
5) Add worms on the top layer. Add one kg worm every five kilogram of materials used.
6) Cover the bedding with plastic sheet and let stand for one to two weeks. Then removed cover after this period.
7) Harvest after 30 to 45 days. Air dry and package.
8) Refill the bed with new layers to revolve the process.
