DIY Lamp Shade From Empty San Mig Light Can

I had a feeling my laptop screen was getting blurred. The LCD brightness is at its maximum. I might need more external light to make it more brighter. Looking at blurred screen for long periods will surely damage my precious eyes.

I want a lamp shade to make my laptop screen brighter. But never want to take the two hours forth and back ride just to buy it. I need an improvised lamp shade to do the job temporarily or maybe permanently.

Here are the things I gathered for my DIY project. I never bought anything.
1 empty San Mig Light Can, soft drinks can and alike will do
1 halogen motorcycle headlight
1 halogen headlight socket, I got one from scrap motorcycle head unit
2 pieces of galavanize iron wires, to fix the halogen light in place
1 12 volts AC to DC adapter, I have a diy voltage regulator.
1 small piece of galvanize iron sheet

The steps:

1) I removed the top part of can by means of sharp pointed knife. Aluminum cans are very thin. You can cut them with ease.  Be careful when doing this!

2) I made a hole on center bottom. The hole should be big enough to fit the halogen lamp. I widen the hole slowly and test fitted the bulb each try. This minimized the room for errors.

3) I assembled the halogen bulb and socket. The socket won’t hold the bulb  so I fixed it with two pieces of galvanized iron wires. Refer to pictures below to see how I did it.

4) I made a stand by forming a Z shape from a sheet of galvanized iron. Then attached it to side of can by blind rivet.

5) The wires are connected to 12+, 12- terminals of multi-voltage DC adapter.

See my DIY lamp shade in action! I am now using two pieces of small magnets to hold the stand on adapter metal casing. Magnets are more effective than heavy metal block. I can position the lamp shade vertically by using magnets.
