Most are trying their best to increase the range of their router wifi signal. Carrying a tablet, laptop or wifi enabled phone around while surfing the internet is common this days. It provides convenience and flexibility. Also, wide wifi coverage permits sharing to neighbors, relatives and friends.
However, there are times when you want to reduce the wireless range. Why? The hackers! There is no best wireless security against a good hacker. There will always be a solution to open the lock. In this case, you have to sort to a better security – reduce the wireless range or disable it completely.
Here are some recommendations.
1) Place the router in lowest part of the house. Basement is the best place – if there is. The walls gonna reduce the signal significantly.
2) Cover the router with several box layers. Try a 5 layers DIY box. Make it thicker if it not serves your purpose well.
3) Choose cheap and unpopular router brand. Perhaps they are made of cheap materials and gonna render weaker signal. Read online forums to spy poor brands.
4) Never use a high gain/throw antenna and booster for routers. You are trying to lower the signal. Using antenna booster is silly.
5) Buy a router with an external antenna only. Unscrew the antenna and the signal will drop low.
6) The ultimate. Never buy router with wifi capabilities. Or, disable the wireless feature of the current router. Then connect to internet via lan cable.
If you wish to share WiFi signal from your router with nearby neighbors, who may reimburse you in some way, be sure to have good strong password protection. Only give password out to reliable neighbors. Also no need to shield signal if password protected and that way you get to use it further away from source. More convenient to you and besides if you have your setting @” always connect” you wont need to keep entering password.
